Old Faithful, Yellowstone NP to Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone NP

Today has been the most wonderful experience for us all. Yellowstone is truly one of the most amazing places we have ever been to on all our travels around the world. Its beauty is just breathtaking.

Rather than go into a detailed posting of our day, I thought it would be best simply to post a sample of the hundreds of photos we have taken and hope that they show why we have all been overwhelmed by America's first National Park.

I'll start with our visit to see Old Faithful erupt at 9am, which it did almost to the minute!

The eruption was much more impressive than yesterday and certainly made up for the disappointment I had felt.

Below are some of the wonderful sights at the many hot springs. First, the varied colours of the bacteria and the minerals deposited by the hot water as it flows down from the springs.

I had to take this photo for my daughter, who has recently bought a Dodge Journey, exactly like the one I am parked alongside here in Yellowstone!

One of the beautiful sky-blue hot pools.

A typical Yellowstone scene of steam rising from the myriad hot springs and vents.

Hot water pouring down into one of the many rivers in the park.

Bob's car and mine covered in snow from the snowfall overnight.

What a great sight!

A magnificent beast!

One of the many ospreys we saw in the park, perched at the top of a pine tree.

We saw this small fir covered in what we thought were white flowers. It was only on closer inspection that we realised it was just snow!

A couple of photos of the great variety of wildlife in the park. Here is a raven that was quite tame. He waited for people to leave the parking lot and then scavenged for any food left behind.

One of the beautiful elk that we saw all over the park.

More photos of the fumaroles and geysers.

One of the great surprises of Yellowstone - the magnificent Lower Falls on the Yellowstone River.

Looking down into the Yellowstone Gorge, a truly incredible sight.

Our first sight of bears - two grizzlies, a mother and her cub.

The Landcruiser parked alongside the frozen Yellowstone Lake with wonderful snow-capped mountains as a backdrop.

Looking down into the foaming water of the Upper Falls on the Yellowstone River.

Just above the Upper Falls, as the river winds its way through a narrow gorge.

Our third bear, another grizzly.

The end of our day at Mammoth Hot Springs and the beautiful travertine terraces, formed by hot water slowly percolating down the rock face.

What a wonderful day it has been and how incredibly lucky we have been with the weather - virtually non-stop sunshine all day! Tomorrow we leave Yellowstone and head east for the town of Sheridan, Wyoming before we reach the next landmark of the trip, Mount Rushmore.
